What the Salary Calculator Can Do
What a salary calculator can compute
| Function | What It Calculates | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Annual to Hourly | Annual salary ÷ 2,080 hours | Compare salaried to hourly job offers |
| Gross to Net | Take-home after all deductions | Know what actually hits your bank account |
| Job Offer Comparison | Compare two offers after tax | A higher salary in a high-tax state may net less |
| Raise Impact | How much a 10% raise increases take-home | Context for negotiation and planning |
| Hourly to Annual | Hourly × 2,080 | Convert hourly job to annual equivalent |
The Annual-to-Hourly Conversion
The standard formula: Annual Salary ÷ 2,080 = Hourly Rate. (2,080 = 52 weeks × 40 hours). A $75,000 salary = $36.06/hour. A $100,000 salary = $48.08/hour. Useful for comparing salaried and hourly job offers on an apples-to-apples basis.
Annual salary to hourly and periodic equivalents (based on 2,080 annual hours)
| Annual Salary | Hourly Equivalent | Monthly Gross | Weekly Gross |
|---|---|---|---|
| $35,000 | $16.83/hr | $2,917 | $673 |
| $50,000 | $24.04/hr | $4,167 | $962 |
| $75,000 | $36.06/hr | $6,250 | $1,442 |
| $100,000 | $48.08/hr | $8,333 | $1,923 |
| $150,000 | $72.12/hr | $12,500 | $2,885 |
| $200,000 | $96.15/hr | $16,667 | $3,846 |
The Gross-to-Net Calculation
Take-home pay requires subtracting: federal income tax (varies by bracket and deductions), FICA (7.65% employee share on first $168,600), state income tax (0–13.3% depending on state), health insurance premiums (varies widely), and voluntary deductions (401k, HSA, FSA).
A $75,000 salary in a state with 5% income tax with 401k contributions: Federal tax ~$11,000 + FICA $5,738 + State $3,750 + 401k $4,500 = $24,988 in deductions. Take-home: $50,012/year ($4,168/month). Your 'salary' and your 'income' differ by nearly $25,000.
