Using Deferment vs. Forbearance

Deferment: interest doesn’t accrue on subsidized loans (it does on unsubsidized). Forbearance: interest accrues on all loan types. Both temporarily pause payments. For financial hardship: economic hardship deferment is preferred over forbearance for subsidized loans. For PSLF borrowers: switch to $0 payment IDR instead of forbearance — $0 IDR payments count toward PSLF; forbearance months do not.

⚠️PSLF and Forbearance Don’t Mix

Months spent in forbearance do NOT count toward PSLF’s 120 qualifying payments. If you’re pursuing PSLF and experience financial hardship, switch to the SAVE plan (which may produce a $0 payment) instead of entering forbearance. Every month of $0 IDR payment counts; zero months of forbearance count.

Marriage and Student Loans: Key Considerations

If you’re on an IDR plan, marriage significantly affects your payment calculation: (1) Filing jointly uses combined household income, potentially raising your payment. (2) Filing separately keeps your payment based only on your income — but may cost more in federal income taxes. (3) For IDR, annually recertify income after marriage to ensure correct payment.
