How Term Life Insurance Works

Term life pays a death benefit if you die during the policy period (the 'term'). You pay a fixed monthly or annual premium. If you survive the term, coverage ends and no payment is made. The insurer keeps the premiums (this is how they profit — most term policyholders outlive their policies). The simplicity and pure protection focus make term the most cost-efficient life insurance option.

Choosing Your Term Length

Term length guide by life situation

Term LengthBest ForConsideration
10 yearsBridge gap before self-insured, temporary obligationCoverage may expire when still needed
15 yearsChildren mostly grown, mortgage 2/3 paid, older parentGood balance of cost and coverage
20 yearsYoung parent with 10-15 year mortgage remainingMost popular term for 30-45 year olds
30 yearsYoung parent with new mortgage, children under 5Longest standard term; highest premium
💡The Term Length Rule of Thumb

Choose the term that extends until: (1) your youngest child is financially independent (age 22–25) AND (2) your mortgage is paid off. If both conditions are met by 2045, you need coverage through 2045. Choose the term that gets you there: if you’re 35 now, 2045 is 10 years away (10-year term) or 2055 is 20 years (20-year term).
