The Three-System Automated RMD Framework

A reliable automated RMD framework has three components: (1) automatic annual distribution calculation and scheduling, (2) automatic tax withholding on all distributions, (3) automatic QCD scheduling for charitable giving. Together these three systems create an RMD process that runs correctly every year with minimal intervention.

Setting Up Automatic Annual RMD Distributions

Most major custodians (Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard) offer automatic RMD distribution programs. You authorize them to calculate your annual RMD and distribute it automatically at a scheduled time of year — typically Q3 or Q4. This eliminates the risk of forgetting the December 31 deadline.

💡Setting Up Automatic RMD with Your Custodian

Call your custodian in January and request automatic annual RMD enrollment. Specify: distribution date (suggest November 1), tax withholding percentage (suggest 22%-30%), and destination account. The custodian will calculate the RMD from your December 31 balance and distribute it automatically each year.

The Annual January RMD Review

Even with automation an annual January review is essential: (1) verify prior year’s December 31 balance statements have been received, (2) confirm the upcoming year’s automatic RMD is scheduled correctly, (3) review and update withholding percentage if income or bracket has changed, (4) plan any QCDs for the upcoming year, (5) evaluate whether any Roth conversion room exists.

  • January: gather December 31 balance statements and verify automatic RMD schedule
  • January: confirm withholding percentage still appropriate for your current bracket
  • January: plan QCDs for the year — contact custodian with charity information
  • November: confirm distribution was processed and taxes were withheld correctly
  • December: final check that RMD obligation is fully satisfied before year-end
