Referral Bonuses Are Taxable Supplemental Wages
Any referral bonus you receive from your employer for referring a successful candidate is fully taxable compensation. The IRS classifies it as supplemental wages — the same category as performance bonuses. Your employer withholds federal income tax at 22%, plus FICA taxes and applicable state taxes. The bonus appears on your W-2.
Referral bonus take-home estimates — 6% state estimate, standard FICA
| Referral Bonus | Federal (22%) | FICA (~7.65%) | State (6% est.) | Estimated Net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | $110 | $38 | $30 | $322 |
| $1,000 | $220 | $77 | $60 | $643 |
| $2,500 | $550 | $191 | $150 | $1,609 |
| $5,000 | $1,100 | $383 | $300 | $3,217 |
When Referral Bonuses Are Paid — and Why Timing Matters
Many companies pay referral bonuses in two installments: 50% when the referred employee starts, and 50% after the referred employee completes 90 days or six months. Each installment is taxed when paid. If the first installment comes in December and the second in January, they are taxed in different calendar years.
If your company pays a $2,000 referral bonus as $1,000 at hire and $1,000 at 90 days, and the hire happens in November, the second installment likely falls in February of the next year. This splits the income across two tax years — which may slightly reduce the impact of each installment individually at filing.
- Each installment is taxed as supplemental wages in the year it is paid
- Two-part payment timing can split income across tax years
- Your employer withholds 22% federal on each installment when processed
- If the referred employee leaves before the second installment date, you do not receive that portion
- No tax is owed on an installment you never receive — only what is actually paid to you
What If the Referred Employee Leaves Early?
If your referred employee leaves before the second installment vests, you simply do not receive that payment. You already paid taxes on the first installment — that stands. No clawback of already-paid referral bonus instalments typically occurs for the standard early departure scenario (unlike some signing bonus clawbacks).
