Nominal GDP measures total economic output in current dollars without inflation adjustment. Why 'Real' Matters for Investment Decisions
Investors should focus on real economic growth, not nominal. When nominal GDP growth is driven primarily by inflation rather than productivity gains, corporate earnings growth may be an inflation mirage: revenues appear to grow while real volumes are flat or declining. Companies reporting 8% revenue growth in a 7% inflation environment have actually grown real business by only about 1%.
