How Personal Loan Origination Fees Work

Origination fees are charged as a percentage of the loan amount, typically 1-8%. They are usually deducted from the loan disbursement: if you borrow $10,000 with a 3% origination fee, you receive $9,700 but owe $10,000 plus interest. Some lenders add the fee to the loan balance instead — you receive the full $10,000 but owe $10,300 plus interest. Both approaches increase your effective borrowing cost.

How origination fees reduce the net amount received from a loan

Loan AmountOrigination FeeAmount ReceivedAmount Owed
$5,0002% ($100)$4,900$5,000 + interest
$10,0003% ($300)$9,700$10,000 + interest
$15,0005% ($750)$14,250$15,000 + interest
$25,0004% ($1,000)$24,000$25,000 + interest
ℹ️Origination Fees Are Included in APR

By law (Truth in Lending Act / Regulation Z), origination fees must be included in the APR disclosure. This is why two loans with the same stated interest rate can have different APRs — the one with an origination fee will show a higher APR, reflecting its true cost.

Lenders That Charge No Origination Fee

  • LightStream (SunTrust subsidiary) — no origination fees, no prepayment penalties
  • SoFi — no origination fees on personal loans
  • Marcus by Goldman Sachs — no fees of any kind
  • Discover Personal Loans — no origination fees
  • Many credit unions — frequently offer no-fee personal loans to members
  • Note: No-fee lenders typically require 680+ credit score — they target prime borrowers

When Paying an Origination Fee Is Worth It

Sometimes a loan with an origination fee has a lower total cost than a no-fee loan at a higher rate. Compare APR (which includes fees), not stated interest rate. Also compare total interest paid over the full loan term. A $200 origination fee on a $15,000 loan at 10% APR may be cheaper total than a no-fee loan at 12% APR over the same term — use the calculator to compare both scenarios.
