What Changes When You Receive a Bonus Mid-Year
A mid-year bonus changes your projected annual income. The 22% flat withholding on the bonus itself may or may not align with your actual marginal rate on the bonus income. Use the moment after receiving the bonus to run a full-year projection and adjust your remaining withholding accordingly.
Mid-year bonus timing and withholding adjustment opportunity
| Bonus Month | Remaining Paychecks (Bi-Weekly) | Time to Adjust Withholding | Opportunity Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 25 | Almost full year | Highest — maximum time to balance |
| April (Q2) | 19 | About 8 months | High — significant adjustment window |
| July (Q3) | 13 | About 5 months | Moderate — meaningful but limited |
| October (Q4) | 7 | About 3 months | Low — limited adjustment capacity |
| December | 1-2 | Almost none | Minimal — consider estimated payment |
Steps After Receiving a Mid-Year Bonus
- Run the IRS Withholding Estimator with your year-to-date income plus the bonus amount
- Project your expected total annual income for the rest of the year
- Determine whether you are on track, over-withheld, or under-withheld
- If under-withheld: increase W-4 Step 4(c) additional withholding per paycheck
- If over-withheld: reduce withholding via Step 4 to keep more each paycheck
- Maximize remaining 401(k) contribution room with the bonus already counted as income
- If self-employed or have investment income: verify Q2 or Q3 estimated payment adequately covers the additional income
The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov/W4app lets you enter year-to-date wages plus any supplemental wages already received. Use your actual YTD pay stub numbers for the most accurate projection. The tool tells you exactly what to enter in each W-4 field.
Maximizing Remaining Pre-Tax Contribution Space
After a mid-year bonus, calculate how much 401(k) contribution space remains for the year (annual limit minus contributions made so far). If you have not maxed your HSA, calculate remaining room there too. You can spread the remaining contributions across regular paychecks for the rest of the year, using the income stability of regular salary to fund the accounts rather than needing the bonus itself to stay invested.
