What Underwriters Evaluate
Life insurance underwriting data sources
| Data Source | What It Reveals |
|---|---|
| Medical exam (blood/urine/vitals) | Cholesterol, glucose, kidney/liver function, HIV, blood pressure, BMI |
| Medical Information Bureau (MIB) | Prior insurance applications and medical codes reported by other insurers |
| Prescription database | All medications prescribed in past 5–10 years (reveals conditions) |
| Motor vehicle record | DUI, reckless driving, excessive violations |
| Attending physician records (APSs) | Requested when significant health history found |
| Financial records (large policies) | Verify insurable interest and financial justification |
| Application questionnaire | Health history, family history, lifestyle (smoking, dangerous activities) |
Accelerated Underwriting: The New Faster Path
Many insurers now offer accelerated underwriting that uses algorithm-driven risk assessment rather than a medical exam, for qualifying applicants. By checking prescription databases, MIB, motor vehicle records, and asking precise health questions, some insurers can approve policies up to $500,000–1,000,000 within days without a blood draw. Qualifying: typically under 60, no major health conditions, low risk profile.
48 hours before: avoid alcohol, excessive salt, and strenuous exercise. 12 hours before: fast (no food or beverages except water; coffee can affect blood pressure and glucose). Morning of: drink water (aids blood draw and urine sample), don’t have the exam right after intense exercise, avoid caffeine. These simple steps can meaningfully improve your results on several key metrics.
What Happens After the Medical Exam
- Paramedical results submitted to the lab: 3–5 business days for results
- Underwriter reviews all data: MIB, prescription database, MVR, medical exam results
- If significant findings: attending physician records (APSs) requested — adds 2–4 weeks
- Underwriting decision issued: approval at stated class, modified class, rated policy, or decline
- If declined or rated: you can request reconsideration or apply to other insurers
