The Rate Environment in 2025

Emergency fund return options: 2020 vs. 2025

Big bank savings0.01%0.43%$64.50
Online HYSA0.50%4.80%$720
Money market account0.30%4.60%$690
4-week T-bill0.08%5.10%$765
12-month CD0.40%4.90%$735
📈The $720 vs. $1.50 Difference

A $15,000 emergency fund at the national average savings rate ($15,000 × 0.01% = $1.50/year) vs. a top online HYSA ($15,000 × 4.8% = $720/year). That’s a $718.50 annual difference. Over 5 years: $3,592. The rate decision on a funded emergency fund is not trivial.

HYSA vs. Money Market vs. T-Bills: 2025 Comparison

All three options offer similar rates in 2025. The differentiating factors are access speed, FDIC coverage, and tax treatment:

  • HYSA: FDIC insured up to $250,000; transfer to checking in 1–3 business days; interest fully taxable as ordinary income
  • Money market accounts (bank): FDIC insured; similar rates; often with debit card access
  • Treasury bills: Not FDIC insured (but backed by U.S. government); exempt from state income tax; 4-week to 52-week terms; purchase through TreasuryDirect.gov or your brokerage

The CD Ladder Approach for Larger Emergency Funds

For emergency funds above $15,000, a CD ladder can marginally improve returns while maintaining adequate liquidity. Example: $5,000 in HYSA (immediate access) + $5,000 in 3-month CD + $5,000 in 6-month CD. As CDs mature, roll them over unless an emergency requires the funds.

ComponentAmountRateAnnual Earnings
HYSA$5,0004.75%$237.50
3-month CD (rolling)$5,0005.00%$250
6-month CD (rolling)$5,0005.10%$255
Total$15,000$742.50

What Happens When Rates Drop?

HYSA rates are variable and move with the Federal Funds Rate. As the Fed cuts rates (expected through 2025–2026), HYSA rates will decline. The strategy response: lock in longer-term CDs while rates are high; hold HYSA for the liquid portion. The yield advantage narrows, but HYSA still beats traditional savings accounts regardless of the rate environment.
