How Social Security COLAs Work

The Social Security COLA is calculated annually based on the change in the CPI-W (Urban Wage Earners) from Q3 of one year to Q3 of the next. If CPI-W rises 3.2% from July-September 2023 to July-September 2024, all Social Security benefits increase 3.2% starting January 2025. This adjustment is automatic — no action required by recipients.

Why COLA May Not Fully Protect Retiree Purchasing Power

The COLA uses CPI-W (wage earners) rather than the CPI-E (experimental elderly measure). Studies show that CPI-E typically runs 0.2–0.4% higher annually than CPI-W, because retirees spend more on healthcare and shelter (higher inflation) and less on education and transportation. The cumulative effect over a 20-year retirement: benefits may be 4–8% lower in real terms than they would be with CPI-E indexing.

💡Delay Claiming to Maximize COLA Benefits

Because COLAs are percentage-based, a larger benefit receives larger dollar COLAs. Claiming at 70 vs. 62 increases your benefit by approximately 75–80%. At 8.7% COLA (2023): a $3,000/month benefit receives $261/month more vs. a $1,800 benefit receiving only $157 more. Every delayed year locks in permanently higher COLA increases.

The Real Value of $1 of Social Security Over 30 Years

With perfect COLA inflation matching: $1 of Social Security benefits maintains exactly $1 of purchasing power indefinitely. In practice, with COLAs averaging 0.2% below retirees' actual inflation experience (CPI-E vs CPI-W), $1 of benefits declines to approximately $0.94 in real terms after 30 years. This is modest but real — and explains why long-lived retirees may feel a subtle decline in benefits' real value over time.
