Filing an Amended Return (Form 1040-X)
- Download Form 1040-X from IRS.gov or use tax software’s amendment function
- Explain the change in Part III of the form
- Attach any supporting documentation (new W-2, corrected 1099, etc.)
- Mail to the IRS address for your state (amended returns generally cannot be e-filed)
- Processing time: 8–12 weeks; check status at 'Where’s My Amended Return' on IRS.gov
Responding to an IRS Notice
Don’t panic if you receive an IRS letter. Most IRS notices are: (1) math error corrections (respond only if you disagree), (2) missing information requests (provide what they asked for), or (3) balance-due notices (pay or set up payment plan). Read the entire notice before responding. Note the deadline and notice number.
If you owe taxes you can’t pay in full, the IRS offers installment agreements. Online Payment Agreement at irs.gov/opa allows setup in minutes. Fees: $31 for online direct debit; $130 for other methods. Interest continues to accrue (currently ~8%) but penalties reduce once an agreement is in place.
