The Debt Payoff Optimization Checklist

💡When to Run This Checklist

Run this checklist when: starting a debt payoff plan, every 6 months during the plan, after any major income change, and after any life event that affects your budget. Each item found wrong is worth money — catching one wrong setting can save thousands.

1. Are You Paying Above Minimums on Your Highest-Rate Debt?

If any payment is minimum-only while you have extra capacity, you are leaving money on the table. The mathematical priority: all extra payment capacity goes to the single highest-rate debt. If you’re splitting extra money across multiple debts simultaneously, you are doing it slower than necessary.

2. Do You Know Your Exact Balance and Rate on Every Debt?

Log into every account today and record exact current balance and APR. Many people have approximate numbers — and approximate numbers lead to approximate strategies. If you discover a balance higher than expected or a rate you’d forgotten, your prioritization may need to change.

3. Have You Requested a Rate Reduction in the Last 12 Months?

If you’ve been with a credit card issuer for 12+ months with on-time payments, call and request a rate reduction. Takes 10 minutes; success rate is approximately 70% for on-time payers. A 3–5 point reduction on $15,000 saves $450–$750 per year.
