Q1 (January-March): Set the Foundation

The first quarter is when prior-year bonuses often arrive (annual review payouts) and when you can still contribute to prior-year IRAs. Actions to take in Q1: contribute to last year’s IRA (deadline April 15), review the withholding on any Q1 bonus you receive, reset your 401(k) contribution rate for the new year, update your W-4 if your financial situation changed.

The 30-Day Rule: Always Plan 30 Days Before Bonus Processing

Regardless of quarter, the most important timing rule is the 30-day-before rule: if you expect a bonus in 30 days, act now. Update your 401(k) deferral, maximize your HSA, review your W-4, and decide whether any charitable contributions make sense. Waiting until after the bonus arrives means waiting for your next paycheck to implement any changes.

💡Calendar the Payroll Cutoff, Not the Pay Date

Payroll processing typically happens 3-7 business days before the pay date. If your bonus is paid March 15, the payroll cutoff might be March 8. Your 401(k) deferral update needs to be active before March 8 — not before March 15. Confirm the processing calendar with your payroll or HR department.

Year-End Checklist: November and December Actions

  • November: Estimate full-year income including expected year-end bonus; identify any bracket risk
  • November: Max 401(k) before December bonus if not already at limit — adjust contribution rate now
  • December 1-15: Make charitable contributions if itemizing; establish or contribute to Donor Advised Fund
  • December 15-31: Harvest investment losses before year-end cutoff
  • December 31: Ensure all pre-tax contributions for the year are processed
  • January 15: Final estimated tax payment for Q4 if needed — covers year-end bonus income
  • January 31: Receive W-2 from employer — verify bonus income is correctly reflected in Box 1
