Pre-Application Balance Transfer Checklist

💡When to Run This Checklist

Run this checklist the week before you plan to apply for a balance transfer card. Completing it in advance ensures you apply for the right card, enter accurate information, and have a solid payoff plan before committing to the transfer.

1. Check Your Current Credit Score

Log into your bank or credit card’s free score service (Capital One, Chase, Discover, and many others offer free FICO scores). Know your score tier so you target only offers you realistically qualify for. 670+ is the threshold for most standard offers; 720+ for the best terms.

2. List All Debts You Want to Transfer

Note exact balance, APR, and minimum payment for each card you want to transfer. Calculate total amount to transfer. This is the credit limit you need on the new card.
