Red Flag 1: The Salesperson Only Discusses Monthly Payment
When a dealer focuses entirely on 'what monthly payment can you afford?' instead of the vehicle price, they’re structuring the deal for their profit rather than your financial benefit. Always redirect to out-the-door price first.
Red Flag 2: The Rate Is Significantly Above Your Pre-Approval
If your credit union pre-approved you at 7% and the dealer is quoting 12%, you’re seeing the dealer reserve — the markup between what the bank offered and what the dealer charges. Show your pre-approval. The dealer can match it or you can use your own financing.
Red Flag 3: You’re Asked to Sign Before Reviewing All Documents
The finance office uses time pressure as a tactic. You have the right to read every document before signing. Take your time with the purchase agreement, financing contract, and any warranty documents. Unexplained urgency is a negotiating tactic, not a reality.
Red Flag 4: Negative Equity Being 'Rolled In'
Being offered to 'roll in' what you owe on your current car means you’re borrowing more than the vehicle is worth from Day 1. A $35,000 car with $5,000 negative equity rolled in = $40,000 loan on a $35,000 asset. You’re immediately $5,000 underwater.
Red Flag 5: The Loan Term Was Extended Without Discussion
If you asked for a 60-month loan and the payment quote you received is for 72 or 84 months, verify the term in the contract. Dealers sometimes extend terms to hit your payment target without disclosing the change in term length.
