Step 1: Set Contribution to Capture Full Match

Log into your HR or benefits portal. Find the 401k contribution section. Set your contribution to at least the percentage required for full employer match. If match requires 6% employee contribution, set exactly 6% as your floor. This is the highest-return automated investment available to you.

Step 2: Enable Auto-Escalation

Find the 'auto-escalation' or 'automatic contribution increase' setting. Set it to 1% per year. This single setting, enabled today, will systematically increase your savings rate each year as salary presumably grows, without any future active decision.

Step 3: Select Target-Date Fund for Automatic Allocation

Find the target-date fund in your plan closest to your retirement year. If you’re 30 now and plan to retire at 67, select a 2062 or 2065 target-date fund. This single fund automatically manages equity/bond allocation and rebalances — removing all future allocation decisions.

Step 4: Designate Beneficiaries

Find the beneficiary section in your plan portal. Name primary beneficiary (spouse or other) and contingent beneficiary (next in line). Without this, your 401k goes through probate on death. Takes 5 minutes, protects your family forever.

Step 5: Set Annual Review Calendar Reminder

Set a calendar reminder on your birthday to: review account balance vs. target benchmark, confirm allocation still matches target-date fund objective, verify beneficiaries are current, and consider a voluntary 1% contribution increase if auto-escalation has been paused.

💡The 45-Minute Setup

Steps 1–5 above take approximately 45 minutes total. Once complete, your 401k runs automatically for years: paycheck deductions, annual contribution increases, rebalancing, and fund management all happen without further action. This is the highest-leverage 45 minutes in retirement planning.
